Shaffer enjoys grappling
seriously with the fundamental question of what art is—the whole picture,
theoretically and beyond, art versus non-art, the philosophy of what it
is that qualifies something to be considered to be art. While pursuing his
interest in conceptual work, his current work involves sculpture and painting
that incorporate elements of length as seen in a series of works involving
lines and grids on canvas and a series vertical towers based on a horizontal-vertical
format that embraces log cabin-like features often suggestive of memorials
and monuments.
He started out as a designer
and sculptor, began painting in the late 1970s and after working in over
two dozen formats, expanded his overall approach to include conceptual and
experimental directions by 2002. His energetic work has been labeled "Pop
Formalist, quirky and playful." He lives in the Baltimore-Washington,
DC area.
